The Many Benefits of Far Infrared Saunas (FIRS)
    by Ryan Minarik, ND, LAc

For most people, saunas are associated with the types in their gyms and weight loss. Or, in many health circles, they come to mind when considering detoxification. Saunas stimulate blood and lymph flow, encourage enzymatic activity, and increase metabolism. Since many toxins are stored in fat cells, and heavy metals can clog key enzymes, these actions of a sauna to encourage tissue mobilization of toxins, plays a key part of any significant detox routine.

Not all saunas are the same. Saunas at many gyms rely on steam, similar to the Finnish saunas and thus conduction and convection to transfer heat into the body (more indirect and thus less efficient). Far infrared saunas are a "dry" type sauna, however using infrared energy, or radiant heat through light waves, to penetrate directly into the skin. This benign form of heat (Infrared energy) is able to penetrate the tissues to depths over 1.5 inches. It is the same form that many acupuncturists and physical therapists use in their heating lamps.

The benefits of far infrared sauna go beyond simply detoxification. Cardiovascular function, and associated diseases, weight loss, arthritis, fibromyalgia and other musculoskeletal pain syndromes, eczema and dermatitis, and heavy metal detoxification can all be supported by sauna use.

Where infrared saunas seem to have major benefit is in heart conditioning and vascular health. One study treated men, with at least one cardiovascular risk factor, in an infrared sauna for 15 minutes once a day for 2 weeks. They found significantly lowered blood pressure, weight, and blood sugar measures, and increased blood flow.(1) Another similar study showed benefits in CHF patients.(2) And another study in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, reported:

"Many of us who run do so to place a demand on our cardiovascular system, not to build big leg muscles. Regular use of a sauna imparts a similar stress on the cardiovascular system and its regular use may be as effective a means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories, as regular exercise."(3)

The article continues on to suggest that a 30 minute sauna session can simulate energy consumption equal to a 6+ mile run. I personally believe running or walking has additional benefits not found with the sauna, and thus is not a completely equal substitute. But, for those who are injured or cannot handle the physical impact of running due to age or disease, saunas are excellent ways to stimulate the cardiovascular system, while gaining additional benefits.

Regarding musculoskeletal conditions, saunas can help with the pain and discomfort associated with stiff, overworked muscles. And, there are beneficial effects on pain and swelling in patients with more advanced conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.(4) Patients with those conditions understand the difficulty in managing their symptoms, let alone side effects of the common medications. It may be comforting to know a treatment as simple as relaxing in a sauna can provide relief.

Recently, a New York Times article confirmed that saunas can be helpful for common cold symptoms. To be specific, they are referring to Finnish saunas, a slight variation from far infrared.(5) Jonathan Wright, MD, also has written an excellent article on saunas, discussing benefits from cardiovascular health to improving one's sexual performance!(6)

An excellent book for more information on saunas and detoxification is one that can be perused in the Elixia Wellness lobby, Detoxify or Die, by Sherry Rogers, MD. Dr. Rogers is a diplomat of the American Board of Environmental Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

Please come in for a special introductory trial. And feel free to call or email with any additional questions!
